Injection Moulding
The compact injection moulding is the right choice, if an expensive technology needs to be covered in an aesthetically pleasing manner. With filigree contours and perfect surfaces, the injection moulded parts are usually used as housing elements. “The ribs and domes can only be used to a certain degree in the design, because the thin-walled plastic parts can be injected with a maximum wall thickness of 1.5-3.5 mm. That’s why the parts are usually combined with the other supporting components and oversee excellent colour and optical characteristics,” explains Michael Eyer, project manager at Fried.
Injection Compression Moulding
Injection compression moulding is a special form of compact injection moulding. This method is best suited for the economical production of large, stable and flat components with the wall thickness limited to approx. 1-5 mm. The autobody parts, a tractor or truck cabin roof are the perfect examples of this. The uniform wall thicknesses include complex inner geometries.
Thermoforming (Single und Twin-Sheet)
The extensive deep drawn moulded parts are possible to produce inner containers e.g., for fridges, covers or fenders. A twin-sheet process is used in order to achieve more stability in the deep drawn parts. In the process two plates will be deep drawn and directly welded one after the other. This allows different material properties to be combined in one component. The methos is well profitable for small and medium-sized series, because the form purchase costs are extremely low compared to a normal injection moulding tool.
PUR-Process
The PUR-process can be considered as an injection moulding alternative, especially when it comes to the fast and inexpensive production of large moulded parts for prototypes and small series. Due to the foam structure, the PU parts are used, for example, in soundproofing elements in vehicle construction. However, very strict precision requirements (less than 0.5 mm) exclude this as a manufacturing process. The classic injection moulding also wins for large quantities, because the PUR-method has a very long production cycle time of around 15 minutes.
Composite-Method
Very robust but lightweight components made of innovative fiber composite materials have long been used in the automotive and aerospace industries. There are various options to manufacture the composite material parts. Shorter cycle times, small tolerances and defined wall thicknesses of the plastic parts make this injection method more and more attractive for many industries.
